While nations like China, Turkey, and India often <a href=\"https:\/\/nabcore.com\/how-some-countries-produce-and-sell-counterfeit-goods-easily\/#:~:text=China%20isn%27t%20the%20only,and%20weak%20intellectual%20property%20protections.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">produce<\/a> the fake goods, European consumers are increasingly the target of counterfeit scams. The rise of e-commerce has only amplified the problem, flooding the online market with fake items that are often hard to distinguish from the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">In the <b>European Union,<\/b> the influx of counterfeit goods (a staggering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/crime-areas\/intellectual-property-crime\/counterfeiting-and-product-piracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5%<\/a> of total imports) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euipo.europa.eu\/en\/news\/counterfeit-goods-cost-eu-industries-billions-of-euros-and-thousands-of-jobs-annually\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">costs<\/a> European industries&nbsp;\u20ac16 billion in sales and nearly 200,000 jobs each year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">In the <b>United Kingdom<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/corsearch.com\/content-library\/blog\/the-true-cost-of-counterfeit-goods\/#:~:text=Research%20shows%20that%20over%20two,between%204%2D6%20counterfeit%20items.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">69% of consumers<\/a> have unknowingly purchased counterfeit products over the past 12 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">In <b>Italy, Romania,<\/b> and <b>Spain<\/b>, authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/media-press\/newsroom\/news\/hit-against-fake-pesticides-across-south-eastern-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently seized<\/a> highly toxic, counterfeit pesticides that were used close to important nature preserves and wetlands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><b>Germany <\/b>was the <a href=\"https:\/\/euipo.europa.eu\/tunnel-web\/secure\/webdav\/guest\/document_library\/observatory\/documents\/reports\/dangerous-fakes-study\/dangerous-fakes_study_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top destination<\/a> in Europe for counterfeit goods classified as dangerous, receiving 21% of the global total.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the construction and electrical industries are no exception to the counterfeiting craze. In 2018, the European Anti-Fraud Office <a href=\"https:\/\/fleximize.com\/articles\/016786\/stopping-counterfeits-construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> the seizure of 82 tonnes of counterfeit steel pipes. In 2021, the U.S.-based certification agency UL Solutions (similar to UKCA in the U.K. or CE in Europe) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-06\/2021-06-11%20-%20Labels%2021PN-17_PZ.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exposed<\/a> a Chinese electrical manufacturer that was falsely placing UL-certification labels on its power cords and wiring. In a recent survey, over 75% of electrical contractors in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BEAMA_online-version.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressed concerns<\/a> about the availability of substandard electrical products on the market.<br>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h4\">The Dangers of Counterfeit Goods \u2013 Hazard Communication and Safety Operating Procedures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to fake products, the obvious concern is safety. Genuine, branded products undergo rigorous testing to meet strict quality assurance and safety standards. Cheap, illegal imitations do not. In fact, it\u2019s estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/corsearch.com\/content-library\/blog\/the-true-cost-of-counterfeit-goods\/#:~:text=Research%20shows%20that%20over%20two,between%204%2D6%20counterfeit%20items.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">32%<\/a> of people who have bought counterfeit goods have suffered a safety or health issue as a result, such as when <a href=\"https:\/\/corsearch.com\/content-library\/blog\/the-true-cost-of-counterfeit-goods\/#:~:text=Research%20shows%20that%20over%20two,between%204%2D6%20counterfeit%20items.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cyclists buy cheap helmets<\/a> that cannot withstand impacts, children <a href=\"https:\/\/euipo.europa.eu\/tunnel-web\/secure\/webdav\/guest\/document_library\/observatory\/documents\/reports\/2022_IP_Crime_Threat_Assessment\/IP_Crime_Threat_Assessment_2022_ExSum_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">play with counterfeit toys<\/a> that contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/communities\/environment\/lead\/docs\/spinbattletoys.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harmful chemicals<\/a>, or consumers take <a href=\"https:\/\/euipo.europa.eu\/tunnel-web\/secure\/webdav\/guest\/document_library\/observatory\/documents\/reports\/2022_IP_Crime_Threat_Assessment\/IP_Crime_Threat_Assessment_2022_ExSum_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake medications<\/a> produced in unhygienic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lack of safety standards can have serious consequences, particularly for counterfeit electrical equipment. In one tragic case, a man from Thailand was <a href=\"https:\/\/euipo.europa.eu\/tunnel-web\/secure\/webdav\/guest\/document_library\/observatory\/documents\/reports\/dangerous-fakes-study\/dangerous-fakes_study_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electrocuted and killed<\/a> while using an iPhone charging with a counterfeit power adaptor. An investigation revealed that the adaptor was an illegal knock-off that was improperly grounded.
